Why home modification for seniors is important?
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the ageing population in Malaysia has been increasing steadily over the years. As of 2020, the statistics show:
Home hazards pose a significant risk for falls among seniors, leading to a high fall rate at home. As a result, home modifications are necessary to reduce the risk of falls and improve safety.
Home modification is cost effective when we compare directly on the loss in Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALY) and Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY). Means when a person fell, become sick, have impairment or disabled, so the person need to bear the medical cost, extra expenses (e.g., need to buy food because cannot cook anymore), loss of income, loss of non-material aspect (e.g. feel lonely, depress), when accummulated, is higher cost than just doing home modification.
FAQ:
1. Can I invite my friends and/or network to join?

2. I am interested but cannot make the event. Can I join next session?

Living Well, Dying Well - Improving End of Life Care for Patients and Families
Imagine a situation where your doctor takes you aside, and gives you the bad news: Your loved one has less than a year left to live. What would you do?
Coming face to face with the unkind reality about the end of one's life can be emotionally distressing, not just for the patient, but for their loved ones as well. Most people would not know what to do, what steps to take, or even what to think.
Palliative care aims to lift the emotional burden and improve the quality of life for the patient and any of their loved ones involved. It eases family members into the process of accepting that the end of one's life is natural, and provides kind instruction on the things family members can do to make the patient's end-of-life experience better, in a meaningful way.
This talk will address stress management for caretakers and family members, by providing helpful tips and new perspectives on the end-of-life journey, based on real experiences in sharing sessions provided by experienced professionals in palliative care.

According to World Bank, going from an aging to aged society in just 24 years, the country’s transition happens at a similar pace to Japan’s and follows the trend of other high-income economies.
In 2020, more than 7 percent of the population will be age 65 and above, meeting the conventional international definition of an “aging society”
By 2044, 14 percent of the population is expected to be above 65 years of age making Malaysia an “aged society”
Come 2056, Malaysia will be a “super-aged society”, with over 20 percent of its population above the age of 65.
As this population ages, the demand for products and services that improve their quality of life will follow. We at iElder.Asia in the healthcare industry would do well to prepare ourselves to receive this demographic with the proper goods and services to meet their needs.

Pressure Sores or Bed Sores – we have heard this word amongst those who are bedridden – a very common and serious problem amongst the Elderly who are frail, bedridden, or otherwise immobile. Let’s start with this question first - What are Pressure ulcers/bed Sores? They are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue, primarily caused by prolonged pressure on the skin from lying in bed or sitting in a wheelchair for long periods of time. Be aware – this can happen to anyone in these circumstances. Once a bedsore develops, it can take days, months, or even years to heal. It can also become infected, causing fever and chills as the infection spreads through the body.
Pressure ulcers remain a major health problem affecting approximately 3 million adults. One of the best ways to healing these pressure sores would be to relieve the pressure, to keep the wound clean and to take antibiotics to ensure these sores get better. Over the years, the healthcare industry relied on Alternating Air Beds, either as an overlay or a deep profiling bed system, to preventing and tackling pressure ulcers. These Alternating Air Beds are designed to stimulate blood flow through a massaging effect as they pump air or sand in and out of plastic or cloth membranes.
Studies into the further prevention and treatment of pressure sores were explored for more than a decade and it was soon discovered that the world of fabric technology showed a significant growth where polyester fibres could support the body without the need for pumps as a possible solution. A fabric that could be pressure mapped below capillary blood flow at just 28mm Hg was created allowing a steady blood flow at even under the most direct pressure points of the body when lying on a normal bed.
No more costly electric bills, no more punctures in plastic mattresses and no more noisy pumps. A revolutionary new solution was discovered and Derek Timm, Co-Director at Dan Medica South, explained at length recently on a virtual call organised by iElder.asia about this breakthrough and revolutionary fabric which heals and prevents bed sores.
