Walking aids include assistive canes, crutches, and walkers.
Not all the walking aids can fit to your needs.
Selecting a walking aid includes taking in consideration your height, weight, health care plan, risks factors and your strength and limitations. Inappropriate selection of a walking aid may compromise your safety, your recovery or increase the risk of falling. For the most appropriate advice on walking aid selection,ย talk to an experienced physiotherapist and occupational therapist who will assess your abilities and your risks factor.

- Forearm crutches - People with strong upper body and good balance
- Armpit crutches - People with weak upper body
- Walking frame - People with poor balance
- Cane - People needing light assistance

A walking aid can helps people with:
1. Impaired ability to walk
2. Maintain upright ambulation
3. Improved stability
4. Reduced lower-limb loading
5. Generating movement
๐๐ญ๐๐ฉ ๐: Wear your regular walking shoes to take the measurements.ย Measure while standing (if possible) with your arm relaxed by your side.
๐๐ญ๐๐ฉ ๐: Check Your Wrist Height.ย The handgrip of walking aid should be
at the level of your wrist crease.ย Your elbow should bend at about 30
degrees when holding the handgrip.ย Make sure your back and trunk are
straight when you are using the walking aid.

If you purchase walking aids online, you can just get some measuring tape and measure the distance from the wrist bone to the floor and make sure the stick you buy is adjustable within that height.

Keep your walking aid safe.
Good practise to check twice per week the rubber tips of your crutches, especially if you walk outdoors.
- Make sure the rubber tip and handgrip are intact and not worn out.
- Ensure that all parts are welladjusted and the aid feels steady when in use.
