MOSTI Visit to iElder: Advancing Innovation in Senior Care

On
23 April 2026, iElder USJ Subang Jaya had the honour of hosting a delegation from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), bringing together leaders from government, research, and industry to explore the future of senior care innovation in Malaysia.

🚶♂️ 2:30 PM – Arrival & Facility Tour

The session began with the arrival of distinguished guests, followed by a guided facility tour. Visitors experienced firsthand how iElder integrates technology into elderly care environments, setting the tone for a forward-looking discussion on innovation.

🎤 3:00 PM – Welcome Remarks

Dr. Kong Why Hong, Managing Director of AIM Healthcare, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the growing importance of technology-driven healthcare solutions to support Malaysia’s aging population.

🏛️ 3:10 PM – Opening Remarks by MOSTI

Puan Suaibatul Aslamiah Binti Abd Halim emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation, particularly in sectors that directly improve quality of life.

The presence of key agencies—including MOSTI, MRANTI, Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), and MIMOS—demonstrated a strong national ecosystem supporting innovation from research to commercialization.

🤖 3:20 PM – iElder Technology Showcase

During the showcase, Olivia Quah, COO of AIM Healthcare, presented iElder’s innovative solutions designed to transform senior care.

Highlights included:

  • Robotic caregivers to assist with daily activities
  • Robotic companion pets (such as robotic cats) to provide emotional support
  • Smart assistive technologies to enhance safety, monitoring, and independence

A key insight shared was that many of these advanced technologies are currently imported. However, iElder is already making strides in local innovation.

Their iElder smart bed, now exported to Japan, demonstrates that Malaysian-developed products can compete globally.

👉 This signals strong potential for Malaysia to develop and export more homegrown solutions to the world.

🔬 3:45 PM – Product Demo & Research by Monash University

The session continued with a compelling presentation by Dr. Keiko from Monash University Malaysia’s Gerontechnology Lab.

A major highlight was her sharing on exoskeleton research, focusing on improving and innovating existing designs to better support:

  • Mobility assistance for seniors
  • Rehabilitation and physical recovery
  • Enhancing independence and reducing caregiver strain

Rather than building from scratch, the research emphasizes refining and advancing current exoskeleton technologies, making them more practical, accessible, and suited for real-world elderly care applications.

This work reflects how research and innovation can directly translate into impactful solutions, especially when combined with industry partners like iElder.

☕ 4:00 PM – Q&A, Refreshments & Networking

The Q&A session sparked meaningful discussions on collaboration opportunities, particularly on how Malaysia can strengthen its position in the global gerontechnology landscape.

Networking among stakeholders further reinforced partnerships across government, academia, and industry.

🎯 4:30 PM – Event Wrap-Up

The visit concluded with a shared vision:

Malaysia has the potential to move beyond being a technology adopter and become a global innovator in senior care solutions.

With strong institutional support and active collaboration, the foundation is already in place.

🌏 Looking Ahead

Today’s session was more than just a visit—it marked a step forward in shaping the future of senior care.

With innovations like robotic caregivers, smart assistive devices, and advanced research such as exoskeleton development, Malaysia is well-positioned to:

  • Lead in gerontechnology innovation
  • Expand global exports of local products
  • Improve the quality of life for aging populations

The journey ahead is promising—and Malaysia is ready to bring its innovations to the world.
