Alzheimer's Disease Foundation Malaysia has shared topic of Wandering for Alzheimer's person.

Do you know that six in ten people with dementia will wander? Wandering is quite common amongst people with dementia and can be very worrying for those concerned for their safety and well-being.

The person's failing memory and declining ability to communicate may make it impossible for them to remember or explain the reason they wandered.

As the caregiver, you need to know how to limit wandering and prevent the person from becoming lost. This will help keep the person safe and give you greater peace of mind.

 

Reasons for Wandering:

  • Changed environment
  • Loss of memory
  • Excess energy
  • Searching for the past
  • Expressing boredom
  • Confusing night with day
  • Continuing a habit
  • Agitation
  • Discomfort or pain
  • A job to perform
  • Freams

Steps/precautions to consider

  • Speak to your doctor-if there's an underlying cause
  • Ensure the person is identifiable
  • Identify any wandering pattern
  • Remove key triggers
  • Involve neighbours and local business owners
  • Make it more difficult to wander
  • Give them a safe place to walk

If a person with dementia goes missing

  • Stay calm
  • Make a thorough search of the house and outside buildings
  • Immediately notify neighbours, police and 
  • Contact the Alzheimer's Disease Foundation Malaysia
  • Walk or drive around the block and immediate areas

When the missing person return home

  • Notify the police immediately and other sources which you have approach for help
  • Do not scold or show anxiety no matter how worried. 
  • Provide reassurance and get back into regular routine
