Interview by MalaysianBeat Digital Magazine – “Grow & Spotlight Malaysia”
This interview is part of MalaysianBeat’s “Grow & Spotlight Malaysia” campaign, an initiative that highlights inspiring local businesses and services making a positive difference in their communities. The campaign celebrates entrepreneurs who are improving quality of life, supporting local innovation, and empowering underserved groups across Malaysia.
In this feature, Olivia Quah, Co-founder of iElder.asia, shares her personal journey, the inspiration behind iElder, and how her team is helping seniors live safely and independently through innovative products, home safety solutions, and technology such as robotic caregivers.
1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your journey began in this industry?
My journey into elder care started from a very personal experience. A few years ago, my mother fell in the shower and injured her wrist. It took her nearly two hour to reach the phone and call me for help, and my father, who has mild dementia, couldn’t remember my number. By the time I got home and took her to the hospital, I realised how vulnerable seniors can be when living alone. That incident changed me. It made me determined to find ways for older adults to live safely and independently — and that’s how iElder.asia began.
2. What inspired you to start your business or pursue this career path?
That experience with my parents opened my eyes to how unprepared most families are when it comes to elder care. I wanted to create something that could make life easier, safer, and more dignified for seniors and their caregivers. That’s why iElder.asia focuses not only on products but also on practical solutions — like home hazard assessments and home modifications — to make living spaces safer.
At the same time, we’re also a launch pad for the latest elder care technologies, such as robotic caregivers and smart aging solutions, because we believe innovation can transform the way seniors live and receive care.
3. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far, and how did you overcome it?
We’ve found that many seniors don’t like using a tongkat (walking stick) because it makes them feel old or weak. So, we try to introduce products that are more practical and dignified. For example, we have an umbrella that doubles as a walking stick. It looks just like a normal umbrella, but it also gives support when walking. Seniors love it because it’s useful, doesn’t draw attention, and makes them feel more confident when they go out.
That’s what we aim for — simple ideas that make everyday life easier and safer for our elderly loved ones, without taking away their independence or pride.
4. How would you describe your brand or company’s mission and values?
Our mission at iElder is to help seniors age gracefully, safely, and independently — with dignity and joy. We believe in compassion, innovation, and trust. We don’t just sell products; we offer complete solutions — from home safety assessments to introducing new technologies that support daily living. Whether it’s modifying a bathroom or introducing a robotic caregiver, our goal is to empower seniors and bring peace of mind to their families.
5. Can you share a memorable moment or milestone in your journey that stands out?
One of my customers once told me that every time she passes by our showroom and sees the iElder signboard, she feels a deep sense of gratitude. It reminds her of how we were there for her family during a difficult time, providing the best care and support they needed. Hearing stories like that really touches my heart — it reminds me why we started iElder in the first place, to be there for families when they need help the most.
I still remember an elderly lady who called me one day, crying on the phone — but they were tears of relief and gratitude. She told me how thankful she was for our iElder transfer sheet, which helped her move her husband from the bed to the wheelchair all by herself. Before this, she always had to wait for her part-time maid to come before she could do it. Now, with the transfer sheet, she could manage on her own safely and confidently. Hearing that really touched me. It reminded me that even a simple product can make a huge difference in someone’s daily life.
6. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in your field?
Start with empathy and curiosity. Truly understand what seniors and caregivers go through, and let that guide your work. Elder care is about heart, patience, and constant learning. Stay open to technology — it’s changing the industry — but always remember the human side. The best innovation is one that helps people live better, safer, and happier lives.
