Matching Wheelchair Functions to Patient Conditions
To choose the right wheelchair, we look at your body condition, your strength, your sitting posture, and your daily life needs. Different wheelchairs are designed for different abilities, so I will recommend the model that keeps you comfortable, safe, and independent.
1. If the patient can push the wheelchair themself
✔ Recommend: Self-propelled / Standard Wheelchair
Suitable for:
- People with good arm strength
- People who want independence
- People who can sit for longer time
- People who need to go outdoors
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair has big rear wheels, so you can push yourself easily. It allows you to move around independently and helps you maintain activity during the day.”
2. If the patient cannot push the wheelchair themself
✔ Recommend: Caregiver-Assisted Wheelchair
Suitable for:
- Older adults who tire easily
- People with weak arms
- Patients who need someone to push them
- People who mainly use the chair indoors
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair is lighter and easier for your family or caregiver to push. It reduces their effort and keeps you comfortable during daily movement.”
3 If the patient has back, hip, or balance problems
✔ Recommend: Reclining or Tilt-Back Wheelchair
Suitable for:
- Patients who cannot sit upright long
- Severe back pain or spinal curvature
- People needing pressure relief
- Patients who get tired easily while sitting
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair can adjust the back angle. It supports your whole body, reduces pressure, and allows you to rest in a safer, more relaxed position.”
4. If the patient cannot bend their knees
✔ Recommend: Elevating Leg-Rest Wheelchair
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair lets you lift your legs. This is important because your knees cannot bend comfortably, so this keeps your legs supported and stable.”
5. If the patient travels often or needs something light
✔ Recommend: Lightweight or Travel Wheelchair
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair is very light and easy to fold. It’s perfect for going out, visiting family, or placing in a car.”
6. If the patient needs easier transfers
✔ Recommend: Detachable Armrest & Footrest (DAF) Wheelchair
Suitable for:
- Patients who need help getting in and out of the chair
- People with limited upper body strength
- Those who require frequent repositioning
- Caregivers who assist during transfers
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair has armrests and footrests that can be removed. It makes transferring in and out much easier and safer for both you and your caregiver.”
7. If the patient needs motorized support for mobility
✔ Recommend: Electric Wheelchair
Suitable for:
- Patients who cannot push a manual wheelchair easily
- People who travel longer distances frequently
- Those who want independence but need extra support
- Patients with limited stamina or strength
Explain like this:
“This wheelchair is powered by a motor, so you don’t need to push yourself. It’s ideal for moving around independently and covers longer distances with less effort.”
We choose the wheelchair based on your body size, how you move, your posture, and your home environment. The goal is to keep you safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible.
