Top 10 Useful Products for My Mum After Hospital Discharge

Top 10 Useful Products for My Mum After Hospital Discharge

When my mum was admitted to the hospital because of her osteoporosis, it was one of the toughest times for our family. Seeing her confined to bed, unable to walk, was heartbreaking. When we finally heard she’d be discharged, we make sure she’d be safe and comfortable at home.

Preparing for her return was overwhelming at first, but we made sure to have the right products to support her recovery. Simple things like an adjustable bed, a shower chair, and grab bars in the bathroom turned out to be lifesavers. These tools gave me peace of mind, knowing she wouldn’t struggle or risk falling. Even something as small as non-slip socks made a big difference in keeping her safe.

Day by day, I saw her strength returning, and with each little improvement, my heart lifted. The right products weren’t just about convenience; they were about giving her a better quality of life during recovery. As a caregiver, they eased my worries, and I felt empowered to give her the care she needed.

What We Set Up at Home for Mom

Bedroom

  1. iElder Auto Reclining Bed
Hospital beds stressed her out, so we chose the iElder wooden bed, which adjusts with the press of a button. She can sit up or lie down whenever she wants, and it looks and feels much more like home. It’s also easier for us to care for her when she’s comfortable. iElder Reusable Underpads have been fantastic for keeping the bed dry and clean. They're soft, absorbent, and can easily be tossed in the wash, making them a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to disposable options. Compared to single-use underpads, the iElder reusable underpad offers superior comfort with wings that tuck securely into the mattress, ensuring it stays in place. Made from cotton, it provides a softer and more comfortable surface for the user.

  2. Treat-Eezi Anti-Bedsore Mattress Overlay
Since she’s lying down most of the time, we added this special mattress overlay that helps prevent bedsores. It keeps her comfortable for longer and helps her skin breathe, so she doesn’t develop any sores. After trying the Treat-Eezi anti-bedsore mattress overlay, we found it to be an excellent solution. Unlike traditional ripple mattresses that use air inflation, which can cause discomfort, the Treat-Eezi offers a more comfortable experience. It's also highly hygienic since it can be easily machine-washed.

  3. Overbed Table for Dining
This is one of the most useful items we got. It’s an adjustable table that slides over her bed so she can comfortably eat, read, or do puzzles without having to move around much.

Mobility

  1. Kawamura KA6 pushchair

Since I don’t have much strength to carry heavy items, the Kawamura KA6 pushchair is a perfect solution for me. At just 8kg, it's incredibly lightweight, which makes it much easier to handle compared to heavier options. I can effortlessly fold it up and lift it into the car boot without straining myself. The compact design is a bonus because it fits neatly into small spaces, and the flip-up armrests and larger rear wheels add to the overall convenience.

Most importantly, even though it's light, it’s very sturdy and reliable, which gives me confidence when pushing my mum around. It’s easy to maneuver, and I don’t have to worry about struggling with a bulky or heavy pushchair. For someone like me who needs something lightweight yet durable, the Kawamura KA6 is the perfect fit.

  2. 3-in-1 Assist Walker
This walker has been a tremendous aid in her rehabilitation compared to a standard walker. It's sturdy, allowing her to use it for standing up and gradually walking. She can also lean on it for added balance when needed. It has provided her with greater independence, which has been incredible for boosting her confidence.

Bathroom

  1. Etac Clean Commode Shower Chair
My mom is very particular—she doesn’t like using diapers, so we keep the Etac commode chair next to her bed. We transfer her to the chair whenever she needs to use the bathroom, and afterward, we clean the pan. For her showers, we roll the chair into the bathroom, where she feels safe and secure.

  2. Grab Bars and Rubber Ramp
We installed grab bars in the bathroom to ensure she can move safely when getting up or steadying herself. Since there's a curb in the bathroom, we also added a ramp, making it much easier to move her commode shower chair in and out when it's time for her bath. This setup has greatly improved accessibility and safety.

Exercise Tools

8. Pedal Exerciser During her rehabilitation, we encourage her to use a pedal exerciser to keep her legs active. It's an easy and effective way to promote movement and improve circulation with minimal effort. With the caregiver's support, she manages to do the pedal exercises for at least 15 minutes a day.

9. Heatlax Heating Pad She often has aches and pains, especially in her joints, so we use a heating pad to help soothe her. It’s simple but effective and really helps her feel more comfortable. I find this device very useful, especially with its two key features: the 90-minute auto-off function and overheat protection. These safety features provide peace of mind, ensuring it turns off automatically and prevents overheating.
10. SilverPad Cognitive Games Our caregiver spends time with her playing simple brain games on the SilverPad tablet. Since my mom isn’t much into watching TV or movies, this is a fun way for her to keep her mind active.

Making Home the Best Place for Recovery

These products have really helped make my mom’s recovery smoother and less stressful for both her and us. The walker, in particular, has been great for her to gain back some mobility, and the SilverPad games keep her entertained and mentally engaged.

If you’re in a similar situation, I hope this gives you some ideas on how to make your loved one’s transition home easier. Every little thing helps, and with the right tools, recovery at home can be a lot more comfortable.
